Community & Outreach

Faith in Action — Beyond Our Walls

We believe that faith must be lived out in the world. West Oxford United Church has always understood itself not just as a congregation of members, but as a servant community embedded in the life of rural Oxford County.

Our community ministry is rooted in a simple conviction: every person in our area deserves to be seen, valued, and supported. We reach out to those who are struggling with food insecurity, loneliness, grief, or hardship — not as charity, but as neighbours who share a common stake in one another's wellbeing.

The outreach work of this congregation carries forward more than two centuries of rural hospitality — the same spirit that once opened pioneer homes to travelling preachers and distressed neighbours.

Our Community Initiatives

Our community outreach takes many forms — practical, relational, and long-term. Here is a snapshot of the ways West Oxford United engages with the wider community.

Food security support and community meals

Food Security Support

We partner with local food banks and community organizations to ensure that residents of Oxford County have access to nutritious food. Our congregation regularly collects and distributes non-perishable items and supports community meal initiatives.

No one in our community should go hungry. This is not an abstract value — it is a commitment we act on regularly.

Neighbour care and visitation ministry

Neighbour Care & Visitation

In rural communities, isolation can be a serious challenge — especially for the elderly, the ill, and those who live alone. Our visitation ministry sends volunteers and pastoral care workers to check in, listen, and be a caring presence.

Sometimes the most profound act of community is simply showing up and letting someone know they are not forgotten.

Church space open to the community for gatherings

Community Space

Our church building is a community asset, not just a congregational one. We open our space to community groups, programs, and gatherings that serve the broader public good.

If you represent a community organization looking for a meeting space, please reach out to discuss how we might partner together.

Seasonal community events at West Oxford United Church

Seasonal Community Events

Throughout the year, we host events that bring the wider community together — harvest suppers, holiday gatherings, community picnics, and more. These events are for everyone, not just churchgoers.

They reflect our conviction that community life is enriched when people of all backgrounds find reasons to gather.

Support programs for families in Oxford County

Support for Families

We recognize that rural families face unique pressures — economic volatility, geographic isolation, limited service access. Our pastoral and community ministry tries to address these practical realities with genuine care and support.

From mentoring young people to supporting families in crisis, we are present in the full spectrum of community life.

Global mission and service through The United Church of Canada

Global Mission & Service

Through The United Church of Canada's Mission & Service fund, West Oxford United participates in humanitarian work around the world — clean water projects, food security programs, refugee support, and medical aid in communities facing hardship.

Our local roots and global reach reflect a faith that takes seriously the interconnectedness of all humanity.

Understanding Our Community's Unique Needs

Rural communities have strengths and challenges that differ from urban centres. At West Oxford United, we do not try to import city approaches — we serve the people and place we actually know.

We understand the rhythms of agricultural life — the uncertainty of seasons and markets, the deep pride in land and craft, the particular kind of community that forms when people depend on one another across long distances and long years.

We also understand the vulnerabilities: limited mental health resources, infrastructure gaps, the quiet disappearance of institutions that once anchored rural life. The church can be — and at its best, has always been — one of the stabilizing forces that holds a rural community together.

This is the work we are committed to — not as a program or a strategy, but as an expression of who we are and who we believe God calls us to be.

Help Us Serve Our Community

Our community outreach is powered by the time, energy, and compassion of people who care. If you feel called to serve — whether you are part of our congregation or simply a neighbour who wants to help — we would love to hear from you.
